Wild boar populations in Argentina and Spain have been identified as significant carriers of zoonotic pathogens. In Argentina’s La Pampa province, a boar was confirmed to carry Trichinella sp., the parasite responsible for trichinosis. Similarly, a study in Málaga, Spain, found that over 90% of urban wild boars carried infectious pathogens, including hepatitis E, Salmonella enterica, and Escherichia coli O157, prompting calls for increased biosecurity and surveillance. In Argentina, the situation has escalated due to the massive population expansion of the European wild boar (Sus scrofa), particularly in the Buenos Aires province. Originally introduced in the early 20th century for hunting, the species has escaped controlled environments and established itself in the Pampas region, including areas near Bahía Blanca, Villarino, and Patagones. This biological invasion, with an estimated population of 4 million individuals, poses severe economic and sanitary threats. Experts estimate annual agricultural ~~damages between~~ damages—including crop loss, infrastructure destruction, and soil disturbance—between US$ 1.3 billion and US$ 1.6 billion. Furthermore, a trichinosis outbreak in Villarino involving over 50 people underscores the public health risks associated with consuming wild boar meat. Dr. Esther Hurtado, Head of Emergency Services at Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella, noted that while these findings require monitoring due to human-wildlife interaction, they do not constitute a “sanitary alarm situation,” as pathogen presence does not guarantee human transmission.
