Overview

In response, the International Environmental Communication Association launched an awareness campaign in Muğla to address human negligence through behavioral changes and field-based communication. Association President Sevda Güner has emphasized that “preventing fires through behavioral changes is more effective than post-fire intervention.” This initiative extends its focus to high-risk areas including Çanakkale, İzmir, and Antalya.

As of late August 2026, the risk level has escalated. Turkey’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, issued a critical warning for the Marmara, Aegean, and Western Mediterranean regions for the period of August 28 to 30, citing high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds.

Local administrations have responded with emergency measures. In Manisa, authorities have implemented increased law enforcement patrols and strict prohibitions on lighting fires, even in designated picnic areas. Monitoring has been intensified for agricultural activities, specifically regarding the use of combines and baling machines; vehicles lacking fire suppression equipment or water tankers may be prohibited from working in high-risk zones.

In Aydın, the Governor's Office noted that wind speeds could reach 40-70 km/h, while the Denizli Forestry Regional Directorate declared a state of high alert for the Denizli and Uşak provinces. Additionally, energy companies have been tasked with inspecting power lines and transformers to prevent spark-related ignitions. Similar vulnerabilities have been noted in İzmir due to dry vegetation and wind.

On a broader scale, Roman Michalak of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) reported that forest fires have already affected over 600,000 hectares across Europe this year, with Spain and France experiencing significant impacts and evacuations.
