In early August 2026, wildfires broke out in several regions of Bulgaria. The first major incident occurred near the village of Vysoka Mogila on August 8, where a fire burned approximately 300 decares of deciduous forest. Driven by strong and variable winds, the blaze threatened nearby houses and required the deployment of seven firefighting teams and heavy machinery to create firebreaks. By August 11, major wildfires across multiple regions—including Blagoevgrad, Haskovo, Plovdiv, and Gabrovo—were brought under control. Significant damage was reported in the Blagoevgrad region, where a fire near Dabrava damaged six buildings. In the Haskovo region, a blaze near Bulgarska Polyana covered over 1,000 decares of forest. Other notable incidents included a 500-decare fire near Kuklen and a contained fire near an ammunition warehouse in Belitsa. Firefighting operations involved volunteers, heavy machinery, and military helicopters, such as the Cougar and Mi-17. On August 20, a large wildfire near the villages of Rozino and Hristo Danovo in the Plovdiv region was brought under control. Reportedly caused by a passing railway train, the blaze spread across multiple fronts exceeding 6 kilometers and affected over 1,200 decares of land. On August 22, extreme heat reaching nearly 40 degrees Celsius and strong winds triggered new large wildfires in the Haskovo region. Near A massive wildfire scorched approximately 10,000 decares between the villages of Dinevo and Koren, 11 firefighting teams, a bulldozer, Dinevo, Lyubenovo, Malevo, and volunteers worked to stop flames spreading toward a forest massif near a Krivo Pole, entering the Koren military training ground. In the Simeonovgrad municipality, fires covering Response efforts involve approximately 700 decares—comprising forest, stubble, 60 firefighters, 17 specialized teams, foresters, volunteers, and non-forest vegetation—affected military personnel, including a Cougar helicopter from the villages of Dryanovo, Tyanevo, and Troyan.
