Massive wildfires in Greece, specifically affecting the Porto Germeno area and the Kithairon region, caused extensive damage across Attica and Boeotia, destroying over 144,000 acres of land and more than 100 homes. Among the victims was Greek actor Tasos Chalkias, who lost his private residence in the blaze. Chalkias initially described the destruction as a deeply personal loss, telling SKAI that he had ‘shed his own blood’ to build the house. Following the incident, Chalkias shared a handwritten poem on social media to convey a message of resilience, stating, ‘Make pain a companion, with it you will rise again.’ In later reflections on the program ‘Studio 3’, Chalkias expanded on the depth of his loss, stating, ‘It wasn’t just walls that burned. Memories burned, 45 years of my intellectual work burned, as well as my wife’s and my children’s, and paintings I owned.’ He noted that the fire consumed Porto Germeno in just two hours after spreading from the Agios Vasileios area in Boeotia. Chalkias reported that approximately 200 homes were destroyed in the area and recounted the death of an 87-year-old resident who perished after refusing to leave his home. He also criticized state management of the disaster, noting that residents were prevented from using vehicles to assist in fighting the flames due to safety restrictions. Despite the loss of the home he had occupied for 50 years, Chalkias expressed his intention to rebuild.
