Wildfires in Montana have caused significant land area burns and property damage. In early August, the Skillet Fire near Tally Lake expanded to approximately 2,500 acres, prompting evacuations in the Good Creek and Alder Creek areas. Firefighters faced challenges due to extensive debris from previous fires. By mid-August, the Sand Creek Fire near Wisdom grew to nearly 20,000 acres, driven by hot and unstable atmospheric conditions. This fire reached the summit of the Maverick Mountain Ski Area, damaging a vintage Riblet chairlift and a ski shack. Mandatory evacuations were issued for Maverick Mountain, Elkhorn Hot Springs, Shale Creek, Clark Creek, and the north end of the Grasshopper Valley. By August 16, the Sand Creek Fire had burned over 27,000 acres within the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, sweeping through nearly two-thirds of the Maverick Mountain runs. The blaze destroyed a top-station patrol shack and caused extensive damage to the resort’s primary Riblet double chairlift, which is likely to be inoperable for the upcoming winter season. While the base area and main lodge remained largely intact due to the efforts of hotshot crews, smokejumpers, and aerial retardant drops, resort owner Erik Borge noted that while the mountain has been burned, the community remains intact. The resort is currently assessing damage and planning rebuilding efforts.
