Wildfires have impacted various regions of Peru, ranging from localized urban incidents to widespread environmental crises. In early October 2026, a large vegetation fire occurred on the cliffs of the Costa Verde in Miraflores, Lima. The blaze damaged protective geomallas, leading to rockfalls and the evacuation of approximately 80 to 100 residents. Authorities investigated the incident as potentially suspicious, noting the absence of electrical cables or scheduled maintenance in the area. By mid-October, the situation escalated into a severe wildfire crisis across multiple departments, including Cusco, Arequipa, Junín, Apurímac, Ayacucho, and Puno. Driven by drought and intense heat, these fires resulted in at least five to six confirmed deaths. In the Cusco region, over 16,000 hectares were destroyed, impacting livestock and homes. Officials noted that the scale of the simultaneous fires has overwhelmed local municipalities and fire brigades, highlighting a need for better prevention models and more specialized equipment. As of October 10, 2026, the National Service of Forestry and Wildlife (Serfor) reported 77 simultaneous fires across more than ten departments. The death toll includes five individuals in the Cusco region and one in Puno. In the Junín region, a fire destroyed more than 250 hectares in the Asháninka community of Cutivireni, leading the government to deliver 10 tons of humanitarian aid. In Arequipa, 54 fires have been recorded, driven by rising temperatures and drought.
