Wild boar encroachment continues to escalate across Italy, causing significant agricultural damage, public safety risks, and political tension regarding disease containment. In the Veneto region, sightings of wild boars, wolves, and bears in residential areas like Torri del Benaco and the Euganean Hills have increased. In the latter, boars have damaged high-quality vineyards shortly before harvest. While authorities have approved a management plan for the 2026/2027 season, Coldiretti Verona continues to advocate for permanent strategies over emergency measures. In Calabria, the situation is worsening; Coldiretti reports that crop damage in Reggio Calabria has doubled compared to last year. In the Vibonese area, stakeholders are calling for better monitoring, fencing, and farmer compensation. In Lazio, the detection of African Swine Fever (ASF) traces in Riano has prompted 20 mayors to demand an extraordinary containment and depopulation plan, warning that movement restrictions could devastate local tourism and agriculture. This adds pressure to the existing political dispute between the Regional government and Rome’s Municipio XV. In Abruzzo, Pescara has implemented an extraordinary containment and removal plan through December 2028 to address approximately 186 boars in inhabited zones. The ordinance, aimed at preventing ASF, includes controlled culling and prohibits the feeding of wildlife. In Umbria, authorities in Terni have convened a technical committee to address increasing wild boar sightings near the Orvieto cliff and within the Orvieto Scalo urban area. Following a request from the Municipality of Orvieto, officials from the Carabinieri, provincial police, and Asl Umbria 2 have agreed to launch an extensive monitoring phase to assess population distribution and risk levels. Other regional tensions persist: Umbria’s Terni officials are seeking 200,000 euros in regional funds, Sardinia’s Nuoro continues to face calls for structural culling, and in Puglia, administrative delays continue to stall management plans for Alta Murgia and Gargano despite heavy economic losses.
