Wildlife reintroduction in Madhya Pradesh reserves

Overview

Conservation efforts in Madhya Pradesh are focused on restoring large herbivore populations in the Bandhavgarh and Kanha Tiger Reserves.

In Bandhavgarh, officials have worked to increase the Indian Bison (Gaur) population following its local extinction in 1998. Through reintroduction programs beginning in 2011-12, the population has grown to an estimated 220 to 240 animals, supported by recent transfers of Gaur in 2025 and 2026 to maintain genetic diversity.

In the Kanha Tiger Reserve, a program is underway to reintroduce Wild Buffalo, a species that became extinct in Madhya Pradesh nearly a century ago. The state government aims to establish 50 wild buffaloes over a three-year period. Following a collaboration with Assam, eight buffaloes were transported from Kaziranga National Park. These animals have moved from initial quarantine into a larger 17-hectare enclosure in the Sookkhar range, with plans for eventual release into their natural habitat once they acclimate.
