Wildlife-related traffic accidents in Germany and Switerland

Overview

In autumn, wildlife-related traffic accidents see a seasonal increase in Germany and Switzerland. In Germany, the German Hunting Association and the German Wildlife Foundation attribute this spike to mating seasons and animals searching for winter food, noting that deer account for 51 percent of such accidents. In Switzerland, the Society of Swiss Veterinarians has called for state intervention to cover medical costs for injured wildlife, as many veterinarians face unpaid bills for treating animals like hedgehogs and birds.

Economic data from the German Insurance Association indicates that wild animal collisions cost German motor vehicle insurers approximately €1.2 billion last year, a seven percent increase from the previous year. Although the total number of accidents remained stable at roughly 276,000, the average repair cost rose to about €4,400 due to higher labor and spare part prices. In Germany, collisions occur nearly every two minutes, with high-risk periods identified during early morning and late evening hours.
