Wildlife smuggling interceptions in Poland

Overview

Polish customs authorities have intercepted multiple attempts to transport protected species into the country.

In one instance, officials at Bydgoszcz Airport seized 75 grams of reef-building coral fragments from a passenger traveling from Egypt. The traveler reportedly collected the coral as souvenirs but lacked the required permits mandated by the CITES Washington Convention and EU regulations. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by customs investigators in Toruń.

In a separate incident in Koroszczyn, officers inspecting a truck from Belarus discovered 41 live lizards, including species such as Goniurosaurus, Calotes, and Lacerta, hidden in the driver’s cabin and a cooling unit. The driver, a 41-year-old Belarusian national, allegedly purchased the animals online in Russia with the intent to sell them in Poland for 3,000 euros. The estimated market value of the lizards is approximately 100,000 PLN.
