Wildlife trafficking in Congo-Brazzaville and Gabon
Overview
Authorities in Congo-Brazzaville and Gabon have conducted several operations targeting the illegal trade of protected species.
In Congo-Brazzaville, law enforcement and forest agents have made multiple arrests. In the Bouenza and Niari departments, individuals were apprehended for the possession and attempted sale of leopard skins and elephant ivory. Additionally, a couple in Nkayi was arrested for the illegal detention and attempted commercialization of a baby mandrill. The primate, which had been kept in captivity since January, was transferred to the Tchimpounga sanctuary for medical care.
In Gabon, a judicial investigation was launched in the Ogooué-Lolo province following the discovery of ivory from two elephants. Forest agents recovered ivory tips and a shotgun at the scene. Suspects in these cases face significant prison sentences and fines under national wildlife protection laws.
