The town of Ilok, Croatia, hosted the international conference ‘European Wine Circle as a Driver of Tourism Development’ and the general assembly of the Iter Vitis cultural route from October 8 to 11, 2026. The initial phase of the event focused on sustainable viticulture, the impact of climate change, and the role of digital tools and cultural routes in connecting wine destinations. Discussions also addressed the involvement of women and youth in transforming rural wine tourism. During the event period, the third Dunav Wine Festival was held at Principovac near Ilok, showcasing the wines and gastronomy of the Slavonia and Croatian Danube regions. Organized by Graševina Croatica, the festival featured the ITER VITIS Awards 2026. Among 19 international awards presented, the City of Ilok and the Ilok Tourist Board were recognized in the ‘Best Winery / Wine Route’ category. Following the conclusion of the four-day meeting, Ilok established itself as an international center for wine and rural tourism. The assembly brought together experts, winemakers, and officials from 16 countries. The initiative, which is co-financed by the European Union and the Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, aims to foster economic growth in rural areas through the implementation of the National Network of the Common Agricultural Policy and support from the Sunflower Network platform.
