Mayor Scott Gillingham began his second term in Winnipeg following a municipal election where he secured nearly 40 per cent of the vote. His initial priorities included coordinating with a council where more than half of the ward representatives were new, securing provincial funding for the North End Sewage Treatment Plant, and implementing a community crisis response line for mental health calls. On November 2, the newly elected city council officially took office following an inaugural meeting. The council consists of 15 members, including nine new councillors and six incumbents. During the swearing-in ceremony, officials pledged to represent residents fairly and avoid corruption. The council’s upcoming agenda focuses on downtown development to attract investment and transit improvements based on rider feedback. On November 4, Mayor Gillingham appointed five members to the Executive Policy Committee (EPC). The committee includes veteran councillors Jeff Browaty, Evan Duncan, and Vivian Santos, as well as newcomers Lara Meseman and Sara MacArthur. Browaty will serve as deputy mayor, while Santos has been named acting deputy mayor. Gillingham stated the committee aims to “balance experienced perspectives with fresh ideas.”
