Wisconsin deer disease outbreaks

Overview

Wildlife officials in Wisconsin are monitoring significant health threats to deer populations. In early September, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reported a surge in deaths linked to Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD), with nearly 900 reports of dead deer across Washington, Waukesha, and Ozaukee counties. Jasmine Batten, the DNR’s wildlife health section supervisor, noted that the state is seeing “significantly higher total numbers” of deaths than in previous outbreaks, which could be “devastating to landowners and hunters.”

In response to broader herd health concerns, the DNR has also issued warnings regarding Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). To prevent the spread of this fatal nervous system disease, officials are urging the public and hunters to follow baiting and feeding bans. State law mandates these bans in counties with confirmed CWD cases or within 10 miles of a positive location to prevent deer from congregating unnaturally.
