Work-life balance and childcare challenges for parents

Working parents and new mothers are facing increasing difficulties in balancing professional responsibilities with childcare needs and costs.

In the United States, childcare affordability is a major pressure point. In Michigan, infant care costs approximately $10,023 annually, which is roughly 20 percent of family income, significantly exceeding the Department of Health and Human Services’ recommended seven percent threshold. In California, annual costs for full-time infant care can reach nearly $22,000. To manage these costs and seek better work-life balance, some families utilize au pair programs or pursue career changes, such as home-based franchising, to gain more flexibility.

Research into women returning from maternity leave indicates that childbirth significantly alters professional perspectives, with 85 percent of respondents reporting a shift in how they view their careers. Many mothers consider reducing hours, changing occupations, or leaving employment entirely due to time management challenges. While over 70 percent of new mothers would choose to continue working if economic and organizational constraints were removed, many report feeling unsupported in the workplace, with nearly 40 percent stating they receive little to no support upon their return.
