Workplace and accidental fatalities in Albania and Kosovo
Overview
Reports indicate a concerning trend of fatal accidents in Albania and Kosovo. In Albania, data from the Central Labor Inspection showed approximately 20 workplace deaths in 2025, with more than ten fatal accidents recorded in the first half of 2026. Experts have attributed these fatalities to a lack of preventive measures by employers and workers, as well as a shortage of inspectors. To address these issues, the Albanian Ministry of Labour announced plans to implement digital systems and drones for inspections starting 1 September 2026.
Recent individual tragedies have been documented, including a fatal fall from a crane in Prishtina and a boat accident in Rana e Hedhun involving a 22-year-old. In Kosovo, a 49-year-old worker died after falling from a height while working for the Shala Group in Pristina. Local authorities have launched investigations into these incidents in coordination with the Labor Inspectorate and the Prosecutor's Office.
