World Alzheimer’s Month awareness

Overview

During World Alzheimer’s Month, health experts and advocates are focusing on the critical importance of early dementia diagnosis. Initial efforts emphasize distinguishing between normal age-related lapses and serious cognitive decline, such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, or frontotemporal dementia.

As the month progresses, the focus centers on the theme “The Earlier You Know, the More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters.” This perspective highlights that a diagnosis serves as a tool for clarity and personal choice, while also acknowledging the broader impact on families and communities. There is an increasing emphasis on the value of lived experience and storytelling to ensure that healthcare professionals see the individual behind the medical care plan.

Global awareness efforts have highlighted a significant diagnostic gap, noting that an estimated 75 percent of people living with dementia worldwide remain undiagnosed, a figure that rises to 90 percent in some low- and middle-income countries. While a cure is not yet available, experts suggest that addressing risk factors—including smoking, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, poor diet, and social isolation—could potentially delay or prevent up to 45 percent of cases. Advancements such as blood-based biomarker testing are also improving diagnostic capabilities.

Local initiatives, such as a program in Belišće, Croatia, continue to promote social connectivity and creativity for the elderly through lectures and discussions on living with the disease.
