The inaugural World Boxing Africa Elite Championships have concluded in Nairobi, Kenya. The event, which marks the first time Kenya has hosted a major continental boxing championship since 1972, served as a critical platform for athletes eyeing the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. Algeria finished at the top of the tournament medal standings, securing a total of ten medals: five gold, three silver, and two bronze. The Algerian gold medalists were Fatiha Mansouri (-51 kg), Yaiche Islam Youssef (-70 kg), Abdou Mustapha (-80 kg), Maoui Mohamed (-85 kg), and Moussaoui Sidi Ahmed (+90 kg). Silver medals were earned by Benane Jawhar, Chaïb Ichrak, and Aïchoun Malak, while Maouche Hichem and Rouaz Douaa secured bronze. This result represents an improvement over the nation’s performance at the 2023 championships in Cameroon, where they earned seven medals. In the overall tournament standings, Kenya was declared the winner due to a higher number of silver medals, closely following Algeria; both nations finished with 14 medals. Uganda placed third with 13 medals, including four golds. Nigeria also achieved a notable medal haul, winning three gold and two silver medals. Following an initial period of five defeats, the 10-member Nigerian contingent regained momentum to secure all three of its gold medals through female boxers: Ajishola Khadijat, Precious Anine, and team captain Blessing Orakwe. Earlier in the tournament, Ridwan Raheem had also advanced to the finals in the men’s welterweight category after defeating Algeria’s Ismail Bekhsis.
