During the World Cup in Short Course Swimming held in Baku, Russian swimmer Egor Kornev tied the world record in the 100m freestyle with a time of 44.84 seconds, matching the 2021 mark set by Australia’s Kyle Chalmers. Kornev also won the 50m backstroke in 22.23 seconds, establishing a new World Cup record. This competition marks a significant development for Russian swimmers, who are competing under their own flag and anthem for the first time since 2022 following the lifting of restrictions by the International Swimming Federation. Building on his previous success, Kornev set a new world record in the 50-meter butterfly (short course) during a subsequent World Cup stage. He secured the gold medal with a time of 21.28 seconds, surpassing the previous record held by Switzerland’s Noah Ponti by four hundredths of a second. Kornev, a sprint specialist, has maintained a highly successful 2026, having previously set multiple national records in Kazan.
