World Folklore Day celebrations

August 22 marks World Folklore Day, an observance dedicated to honoring the intangible heritage, artistic expressions, and customs that define national identities globally. The term, derived from the English words ‘folk’ (people) and ‘lore’ (knowledge), was first proposed by British writer William John Thoms in 1846.

In Brazil, the celebration highlights a complex cultural tapestry shaped by Indigenous, African, and European influences. Regional manifestations include legends such as Saci-Pererê, Iara, and Curupira, as well as traditional musical and dance forms like Frevo, Maracatu, and Baião. In the Amazonian region, specifically Acre, legends like the Mapinguari and Caipora serve as traditional wisdom for forest conservation.

Global celebrations extend to various other nations. In Croatia, cultural-artistic societies maintain heritage through the sounds of the tamburica and traditional dances like the šokačko kolo.
