The World Food Programme (WFP) is navigating significant operational and financial challenges while attempting to coordinate aid in crisis zones. In Sudan, the agency is facing a critical funding shortage that threatens its ability to address the world’s largest food crisis, where nearly 20 million people face acute hunger. Although the WFP has improved physical access to isolated regions, funding has dropped from $645 million the previous year to $206 million in 2026, leaving the agency needing nearly $300 million just to maintain current operations. Recent warnings from the WFP highlight an escalating crisis in South Sudan, where approximately 7.8 million people—more than half the national population—are struggling to find food daily. Over one million vulnerable individuals in South Sudan risk losing essential nutritional assistance by October due to a combination of conflict, displacement, economic instability, and climate shocks, such as El Niño-driven droughts and crop failures. To address these humanitarian needs, the WFP is engaging in high-level diplomatic and security coordination. In Egypt, discussions with Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty focused on securing sustainable aid access for the Gaza Strip and supporting stability in Sudan. Simultaneously, in Yemen, the WFP is working with security officials in the Hadramaut coast to strengthen protections for humanitarian workers and facilities to ensure aid reaches those in need safely.
