Following FC Twente’s 4-1 victory against Qarabag FK to qualify for the Conference League, striker Wout Weghorst faced criticism from analyst Johan Derksen for his frequent religious expressions. Derksen labeled Weghorst a “Jesus-freak” during a broadcast, arguing that his constant mentions of faith were excessive. Shortly after, Weghorst continued his scoring form by netting a goal in FC Twente’s 4-1 win over SC Cambuur. The striker stated that his recent goals have provided him with much-needed confidence. During this period, Weghorst also announced his engagement via Instagram. Public scrutiny intensified after Weghorst attributed FC Twente’s success against Qarabag FK to divine intervention, stating he felt ‘help from above’ due to lightning occurring before the match. Dutch presenter Tim Hofman criticized these remarks on social media, calling them “insane” and a “delusional pattern recognition.” Hofman argued it was inappropriate for a professional athlete to suggest divine support in a “futile sports game,” while also describing the broadcaster NOS’s coverage of the interview as “journalistic clownery.” More recently, Weghorst’s conduct on the pitch has drawn further scrutiny. During a 2-2 draw against FC Groningen, the striker was involved in a confrontation with goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen. Journalist Valentijn Driessen criticized the incident and Weghorst’s goal celebrations, labeling the players involved as some of the most “irritating men on the Dutch fields.”
