The World Surf League event at Teahupo’o in Tahiti continues to face heavy four-meter swells and challenging conditions. While wildcard competitor Kelly Slater advanced to the second round with a two-wave total of 16.23, several top-ranked Brazilian surfers have faced setbacks. Yago Dora and Filipe Toledo were both eliminated in their opening heats. Dora lost to Hawaii’s Seth Moniz with a score of 14.33 to 15.97, while Toledo was defeated by Japan’s Connor O’Leary, finishing with 1.63 points against O’Leary’s 4.06. Samuel Pupo was also eliminated. Gabriel Medina’s participation remained a focus following a training accident involving a coral reef that required four stitches. In a subsequent heat, the 54-year-old American wildcard Kelly Slater defeated Medina to advance to the third round. Despite breaking his board during the heat, Slater secured a two-wave total of 19.06 out of 20, while Medina finished with 16.10. Slater noted that the victory felt like “revenge” following Medina’s win over him in the 2014 final at the same venue. Slater is scheduled to face Australian Jack Robinson in the next round. Other notable performances include Griffin Colapinto, who recorded a perfect 10-point ride and a season-high heat total of 19.60. In the women’s competition, 14-year-old local wildcard Kelia Gallina defeated two-time world champion Tyler Wright, while Yolanda Hopkins advanced to the second round after defeating Stephanie Gilmore. Despite the elimination of Medina, Dora, Toledo, and Samuel Pupo, Brazil maintains a strong presence. Ítalo Ferreira, João Chianca, Alejo Muniz, and Miguel Pupo have all advanced to the third round. Ferreira notably took the lead in the WSL world rankings following his victory over Luke Thompson.
