The 26th World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit has concluded in Valletta, Malta. During the summit, the WTTC released economic forecasts projecting global sector growth of 2.5% in 2026, with European growth expected to reach 3.1%. Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau served as a keynote speaker, characterizing tourism as an ‘antidote to global isolationism’ and warning that geopolitical tensions could damage national attractiveness. A major outcome of the summit was a collective commitment by WTTC members to provide $2 billion in new investment for Malta. This funding aims to support infrastructure, accommodation, connectivity, and visitor experiences. WTTC leadership noted that the commitment reflects “strong confidence in the Maltese government’s leadership and the country’s potential for sustainable sector growth.” The investment follows strong economic performance in the region; travel and tourism is projected to contribute $4.9 billion to the Maltese economy in 2026, representing approximately 16.9% of the nation’s GDP. Malta also recorded the highest annual increase in tourism GDP contribution among European economies in 2025, growing by 16.8%.
