WWII bomb discovery and evacuation destruction in Belgrade
A World War II-era German SC 250 aerial bomb was discovered at a construction site on Poenkareva Street in the Palilula municipality of Belgrade. The device, believed to date back to the April 1941 bombings, weighs approximately 250 kilograms and contains roughly 130 kilograms of explosives. Because the bomb features an electrical detonator, Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić announced it must be destroyed on-site. The operation, led by the Sector for Emergency Situations, is was scheduled to be conducted in four phases to ensure the safety of citizens, property, and responders. Authorities have initiated mass evacuations for residents within a 150-meter radius of the site, with additional precautions for those located between 250 and 300 meters away. Evacuated residents have been directed to temporary locations, including local schools and a cultural center. in broader risk zones. To facilitate the operation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs activated an emergency alarm via SMS, public transport routes have been were altered, and municipal services have moved vehicles parked within from the danger zone. On Sunday, October 4, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) successfully executed the on-site destruction of the bomb. The disposal operation involved over 350 personnel. Minister Ivica Dačić oversaw the process from a command center, noting that the bomb’s technical characteristics made the task particularly complex.
