On August 11, 2026, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) appointed Xavi Hernández as the head coach of the Netherlands men’s national team through the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Succeeding Ronald Koeman, Hernández aims to restore a “Total Football” identity through attacking play and high pressure. Following the team’s 2026 World Cup elimination by Morocco, captain Virgil van Dijk confirmed on September 21, 2026, that he will continue playing for at least two more years, noting that a supportive conversation with Hernández was instrumental in his decision. As Hernández implements his tactical blueprint, analysts have noted shifts in squad suitability. Former international Hedwiges Maduro suggested Denzel Dumfries may face competition from Jurriën Timber, who may better fit Hernández’s vision of an inverted right-back. Additionally, analysts Kenneth Perez and Marciano Vink expressed concerns regarding a lack of natural left-back specialists, noting that Micky van de Ven has been utilized in the role recently. While Hernández has expressed satisfaction with the team’s adoption of his philosophy, his appointment has faced scrutiny. Former international Wesley Sneijder criticized the KNVB for hiring Hernández, alleging a double standard regarding coaching qualifications. On October 4, 2026, during a 2-1 UEFA Nations League victory against Serbia at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, Virgil van Dijk became the 11th player in Dutch history to reach 100 international appearances. The 35-year-old defender, who debuted in 2015, described the milestone as something he ‘never dared to dream of.’ During the match, he played in an unusual right-center defensive role. Hernández praised the veteran, describing him as a ‘true leader.’ Despite early Nations League results, the squad faces a significant injury crisis. Cody Gakpo, Brian Brobbey, and Jan Paul van Hecke are currently sidelined. ~~To prepare for upcoming matches, Hernández has opted to refresh the midfield by starting Quinten Timber and Guus Til in place of Ryan Gravenberch and Tijjani Reijnders.~~
