Xenophobia against Northeast Brazil during elections

Overview

Following the first round of the 2026 Brazilian presidential elections, residents of Northeast Brazil have been subjected to widespread online hostility. Research by Ativaweb DataLab identified approximately 27 million offensive posts across various social media platforms, with 82.2% of analyzed mentions containing critical tones. These attacks, largely originating from the South, Southeast, and Central-West regions, frequently transitioned from political disagreement into xenophobia, often associating Northeastern voters with poverty or questioning their intellectual capacity.

Sociological research has linked this stigmatization to historical political, economic, and racial biases dating back to the late 19th century.

As the election moves toward a runoff, the region faces additional political challenges regarding voter turnout, particularly in states like Piauí. Concurrently, legal actions have been initiated in response to discriminatory rhetoric; for instance, the Public Ministry and Civil Police of Bahia have opened an investigation into comments that described the state as the ‘cancer of Brazil’.
