Xpeng has introduced its robotaxi service, named ‘Xpeng Yoyo’, as part of its strategy to commercialize autonomous mobility. The vehicle is built on the company’s GX model and utilizes four proprietary Turing AI chips alongside a second-generation VLA large model to achieve L4-level autonomous driving without the use of LiDAR sensors or high-definition maps. Following more than 2,200 internal test runs, the company has transitioned to a beta testing phase in Guangzhou, China. This phase includes online registration for external users via an invitation code system and allows for driverless operation on Class I, II, and III roads. The Yoyo vehicles are equipped with passenger amenities such as zero-gravity massage seats, integrated entertainment screens, and pre-trip temperature control. Technically, the system relies on cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors, supported by four Turing chips providing 3,000 TOPS of computing power. Xpeng utilizes a second-generation Vision-Language-Action (VLA 2.0) model to facilitate deployment across various cities. Regarding its business model, Xpeng intends to act as a technology provider and ecosystem enabler, partnering with external operators to manage field services. Amap, a Chinese mobility platform, has been announced as the first partner for these services. Xpeng aims to launch full passenger services without safety drivers by 2027, targeting a per-vehicle break-even point in Guangzhou by the second half of that year. In a significant regulatory milestone, the XPENG YOYO brand has officially been granted L4-level autonomous driving demonstration operation qualifications. This permit transitions the business from technical verification and internal testing to a phase of open user operations and commercial exploration. This follows the May production of the company’s first mass-produced robotaxi vehicle and provides a foundation for potentially exporting integrated autonomous driving solutions to global partners.
