Yassir Zabiri, a Moroccan striker on loan from Rennes, has become a key figure for Racing Santander. Following a breakout performance where he scored a hat-trick in a 3-2 victory over Elche CF, Zabiri continued his scoring form during the fifth matchday of La Liga. In a match against Deportivo Alavés, Zabiri scored twice to lead Racing Santander to a 2-1 comeback victory, bringing his season total to five league goals. Zabiri has extended this scoring streak to six goals in his first six La Liga appearances. During a recent match against FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou, he scored Racing Santander’s second goal by capitalizing on an error by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny, though his team ultimately suffered a 7-2 defeat. The 21-year-old is currently averaging a goal approximately every 46 minutes of play. Zabiri, a product of the Mohammed VI Football Academy and a U-20 World Cup winner with Morocco, has seen his recent form earn him recognition as a ‘discovery of the season’ by Spanish media. His success in Spain follows a difficult period in France characterized by injuries and a lack of continuity. While he remains under contract with Stade Rennais until 2029, his current loan spell has placed him in the spotlight of Spanish football. His momentum continued into the end of September, when the Marrakech native was named the La Liga Under-23 Player of the Month. By the eighth matchday of the season, Zabiri had increased his tally to seven goals, placing him level with high-profile players Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal in the race for the Pichichi Trophy. ~~Despite Racing Santander sitting in 16th place, Zabiri’s efficiency remains notable, averaging a~~ Zabiri recently secured his seventh goal ~~every 68 minutes.~~ of the season during Racing Santander’s 2-2 draw against Valencia CF, officially joining Mbappé and Yamal as La Liga top scorers.
