Conflict in Yemen has seen a recent escalation in airstrikes targeting civilian areas in the Taizz province. In late September, Saudi-led airstrikes in the port city of Mocha killed at least six civilians, including two children and a woman, following the Houthi seizure of the city and their advance toward the Bab al-Mandab Strait. On September 27, further airstrikes at the Mafraq Mawiyah market and commercial shops in the Al-Ta'ziyah district killed at least seven people and injured approximately 40 others, including five children. Brigadier General Yahya Saree, a spokesperson for the Sanaa-based armed forces, reported that a Saudi F15 fighter jet launched the raids, moving from the Khamis Mushait base in Saudi Arabia to Taiz and Al-Jawf before returning to Saudi Arabia. While the Houthi-aligned Al-Masirah television station and the Houthi Health Ministry reported casualties of at least seven dead and 40 injured, sources close to the movement told Agence France-Presse that the strikes killed approximately 30 fighters and eight civilians. The Yemen Health Ministry described the targeting of civilian markets and a local radio station wall as a violation of international law. While Houthi officials accused Saudi Arabia of targeting a market, the internationally recognized government of Yemen maintained its forces were targeting a Houthi camp and vehicles located near the site. Military sources cited by Reuters indicated that Houthi members had recently established a camp in close proximity to the market.
