Youngpoong Seokpo Smelter environmental and safety crisis

The Youngpoong Seokpo Smelter in Bonghwa is facing escalating environmental, legal, and safety crises. Initial reports indicate massive soil contamination, with an additional 125,000 cubic meters of contaminated soil discovered beyond previous estimates. As of July 2026, the soil remediation completion rate was only 53.6%, hampered by administrative litigation and disputes over pollutant responsibility.

In response to these issues, the Financial Services Commission imposed a record fine of approximately 20.47 billion won on Youngpoong for allegedly underreporting purification liabilities between 2021 and 2024. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has also launched a reinvestigation into potential environmental and soil conservation law violations. Government officials have threatened factory closure if the contamination threatens the Nakdong River drinking water supply.

Adding to these challenges, the facility experienced its second fire in two months on September 21, 2026. While the blaze was extinguished without casualties, the recurring incidents have raised significant concerns regarding safety management and equipment maintenance at the plant.
