Youth and millennial debt management trends

Overview

A survey of 2,000 US adults conducted by National Debt Relief and Wakefield Research indicates that Gen Z and Millennials are increasingly utilizing artificial intelligence and gambling to manage significant debt.

Among individuals with unsecured debt, 38% of Millennials and 27% of Gen Zers owe $7,500 or more across various categories, including medical bills and credit cards. The study highlights a generational shift in coping mechanisms, noting that 65% of Gen Z and 49% of Millennials who gamble regularly report betting specifically to eliminate debt. Cited activities include sports betting, day trading, and prediction markets such as Polymarket and Kalshi.

Furthermore, younger generations are turning to AI for financial guidance at higher rates than older cohorts. Approximately 69% of Millennials and 64% of Gen Z report using AI for money advice during financial struggles. Respondents indicated that AI provides “judgement-free advice” and is more approachable than human interaction, with many stating they feel more comfortable discussing financial issues with computers than with family or friends.
