Youth mental health and suicide crisis in Italy
Overview
Mental health professionals and psychological organizations in Italy are raising alarms regarding rising rates of suicide and suicide attempts among young people.
Data from the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome indicates that its child neuropsychiatry department recorded 387 emergency admissions for suicidal ideation or attempts in 2023, averaging more than one case per day. Experts, including Maria Antonietta Gulino, President of the National Council of the Order of Psychologists, have emphasized the urgent need for prevention and the establishment of support networks within schools, families, and communities to identify distress early.
There are also growing concerns regarding a deficit in specialized psychiatric beds and structures necessary to support adolescents through the long-term recovery process following a suicide attempt.
