A new 288-meter glass elevator, known as the Fuyao Ladder, has commenced operations in the Nizhuhe Grand Canyon in Yunnan Province, China. Developed by Ningbo Hongda Elevator, the system is designed to assist local residents and students in navigating steep terrain. Previously, children from Nizhuhe village faced a dangerous journey of up to three hours each way on narrow, landslide-prone paths to reach Guanzhai Village Primary School. The new elevator travels at 5 meters per second, completing its ascent in approximately 50 seconds. When used alongside the existing 268-meter Qingyun elevator and a cable car network, the total transit time to school is reduced to roughly 30 minutes. The infrastructure is part of a larger tourism development project. While the system can transport up to 1,200 people per hour and serves tourists, the elevators and cable cars are provided free of charge to local residents of Nizhuhe and Guanzhai. The increased accessibility is expected to boost visitor numbers to the canyon area.
