In early August 2026, Zakynthos municipal authorities launched several beach-related projects. On 2 August, technical studies proposed a 30-metre artificial shoreline extension and reinforcement of about 190 metres at Naftia beach to protect a historic shipwreck and curb erosion. While supporters argue this is essential to protect a national heritage site, environmental groups and scientists have warned that the intervention could affect the natural balance. The following day, Mayor George Stasinopoulos announced the installation of four SeaTrac wheelchair-accessible beach systems at Agios Sotiris, Banana (Vasiliko), Tsilivi, and Alikes. Following meetings with the association ‘Oi Popolaroi’, the council also approved proposals for disabled parking, a ramp to the Spiritual Centre, an accessible playground, and the creation of the island’s first Supported Living Residence. On 5 August, Greek MP Dionysios Aktipis reported that Deputy Minister Nikos Papathanasis signed a decree allocating European Regional Development Fund money to the Argasi beach redevelopment. A contractor has been appointed, moving the project into the implementation phase. By late August, MP Aktipis announced that approximately €105 million has been secured for various island-wide infrastructure developments. This includes the dredging of the port, scheduled to begin in autumn, and the planning of a new marina. Additionally, redevelopment works at Argasi beach are expected to commence in October, alongside expansion projects related to the Shipwreck (Navagio) site and improvements to the local hospital and Laganas area. On 31 August, the Zakynthos Association of Persons with Disabilities, ‘Oi Popolaroi’, welcomed the completion of the second SeaTrac mechanism installation at Tsilivi beach, noting it as a step toward providing “autonomous and safe sea access” for those with limited mobility. However, the association raised concerns regarding the misuse of these facilities, reporting that some individuals are using the mechanisms as diving ramps and occupying designated shaded areas.
