Zambia maize export and agricultural economy

Overview

The Zambian Ministry of Agriculture lifted restrictions on the export of maize grain and maize products, such as mealie meal, to allow farmers access to competitive international markets. This policy shift was intended to improve household incomes and stimulate the agro-processing sector through regulated trade via the Zambia Electronic Single Window platform.

Following this, the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) secured export contracts for 1.5 million tonnes of maize. Despite a bumper harvest that expanded the FRA’s purchase target to 2.7 million tonnes, the agency faced significant debt, owing farmers approximately K14.6 billion ($725 million) for grain purchased during the 2026 marketing season. To address these outstanding payments, the government proposed a K19.9 billion ($988 million) supplementary budget.

Concurrently, Zambia reported an increase in the annual inflation rate to 6.3 percent in October 2026, alongside a trade deficit of US$186.4 million in September.
