Zamfara kidnapping and rescue operations

Entities: Joint Task Force North West · Alhaji Azaria · Dr. Aminu Yusuf · Falalu Yusuf · Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja

Overview

In June 2024, armed bandits abducted seven students from the Federal Polytechnic in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State. After weeks of intelligence‑led action by the Department of State Services and Operation Fansan Yamma troops, all captives were freed by 19 June, with one kidnapper arrested and the others neutralised.

Six years later, security forces continued to confront the same bandit threat. On 28 July 2026 troops from the Joint Task Force North West rescued the polytechnic rector and his family after an armed intrusion, killed the assailant’s guard and injured another resident. The same day, soldiers intercepted a separate kidnapping attempt in Tungan Dorawa, rescuing a businessman and 21 civilians and arresting a suspect. Both incidents underscore the persistent insecurity in Zamfara and the federal response under Operation Fansan Yamma.

The July 28 operation, carried out by Sector 2 of the Joint Task Force North West, freed Dr Aminu Yusuf, the Federal Polytechnic rector, and his family after attackers broke into his home, killing his private security guard Isah Yankaba and wounding another resident. In the same night‑patrol, troops responded to a distress call from the Tungan Dorawa community in Barkeji Village, rescuing businessman Alhaji Azaria and 21 civilians and detaining 45‑year‑old Falalu Yusuf, identified as an alleged terrorist informant. Officials said the missions are part of Operation Fansan Yamma’s aim to restore peace across Zamfara and the wider north‑west region.
