Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi initiated a reconciliation process by launching a Joint Discussion Committee consisting of members from the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and ACT Wazalendo parties. The committee was established to promote political peace, unity, and stability following previous agreements between the two parties. Following these efforts, a national consensus was reached to foster unity and development. Mary Chatanda, Chairperson of the CCM Women's Union, noted that the process involved engaging retired leaders and opposition parties to facilitate the formation of a Government of National Unity (SUK). This development follows negotiations to finalize the structure of the unity government after the October 2025 general elections. In September 2026, the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) commended the Tanzanian government for its cooperation and the steps taken to facilitate reconciliation in Zanzibar. During its 74th meeting in New York, the committee recognized these actions as a “solid foundation for further democratic and political progress within the country.” While acknowledging these positive developments, CMAG emphasized the necessity of continued work to ensure “inclusive and transparent multi-party political dialogue,” as well as the protection of media, civil, and political freedoms.
