Overview
Paleontologists announced the identification of a new Late Triassic sauropodomorph, Musango matusadonaensis, from fossils recovered on the shore of Lake Kariba in northern Zimbabwe. The specimen, about 4.5 metres long and weighing roughly 220–390 kg, dates to roughly 210 million years ago. The find was led by Professor Paul Barrett of the Natural History Museum in London, with collaborators from Zimbabwe and South Africa, and was published in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology in late July 2026.
The discovery challenges earlier views that Triassic dinosaurs across southern Africa formed a uniform fauna, suggesting instead a mosaic of distinct ecosystems. Researchers highlighted the find’s relevance to earlier African discoveries such as Mbiresaurus raathi, underscoring Zimbabwe’s emerging importance for paleontological research and its potential to illuminate early dinosaur evolution and biogeographic links between Africa, South America, and South Africa.
