Prominent Zimbabwean businessmen have drawn significant public scrutiny due to high-profile displays of wealth and their perceived political connections. In Kenya, businessman Wicknell Chivayo attracted attention at a traditional engagement ceremony for the daughter of President William Ruto. Chivayo’s presence, including his display of a luxury watch valued at approximately USD 1.5 million and footage of President Ruto driving him to a helipad, has sparked discussions regarding his access to high-level African political leaders. In Zimbabwe, similar scrutiny has followed massive cash displays by elite figures. Chivayo donated US$1 million in cash to the United Family International Church, while sanctioned tycoon Kudakwashe Tagwirei reportedly gifted his son $17.5 million in cash and real estate during a wedding attended by the President of Zimbabwe. These events have highlighted the economic divide and the resources held by a politically connected elite during periods of national economic instability. Recently, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has publicly defended Chivayo, describing him as a philanthropist and urging him to ‘stay in that lane’ regarding his community contributions. Mnangagwa challenged critics to provide evidence of wrongdoing to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission. Chivayo’s practice of gifting luxury vehicles and cash to musicians and religious leaders remains controversial; for instance, musician Enzo Ishall reportedly sold a Chivayo-gifted vehicle for US$60,000, significantly less than its reported US$145,000 purchase price, citing high maintenance costs.
