Zoo Leipzig is preparing for the opening of its ‘Feuerland’ exhibition on September 1, 2026. This event highlights the zoo’s involvement in global biodiversity, including primate research in North Vietnam, hamster protection in Central Germany, and initiatives in Chilean Patagonia to protect species such as the river otter and Darwin’s frog. Partner organizations like the Rhino and Forest Fund e. V., ZGAP, and Orang-Utan in Not e. V. participate to provide insights into endangered species protection. On September 1, 2026, the ‘Feuerland’ exhibit officially opened. The 5,500-square-metre project, which took five years to complete, includes a five-million-litre saltwater basin and a 100-metre-long underwater tunnel, noted as the longest of its kind in Europe. The facility houses Humboldt penguins, seals, seabirds, and marine pelicans. To simulate natural conditions, the zoo implemented a wave system and beach areas. Visitors can observe animals from ‘Pacifico’, a wooden ship mimicking the Pacific coast, or view feedings and medical training via a large LED wall.
