Zoo Zürich species conservation realignment

Overview

Zoo Zürich has announced a strategic plan to restructure its animal collection by 2030, prioritizing endangered species and those of high scientific research value. Guided by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the zoo aims to optimize its space to support biodiversity and ecological study.

As part of this transition, several animals will be relocated. Bactrian camels are scheduled to move to a camel farm in Thurgau or Olmerswil to make room for Golden Takins, an endangered Himalayan species. The zoo also plans to transfer seals and end the keeping of non-threatened King penguins, noting that planned marine habitats cannot meet the specific cooling requirements for certain Antarctic species.

While some species like meerkats will remain due to research partnerships with the University of Zurich, other large mammals—including elephants, rhinoceroses, gorillas, tigers, and giraffes—will stay because they are already classified as endangered.
