Italian mountain rescues aid climbers on Gran Sasso, Monte Gallo and Monte Sumbra

On 8 June 2026 the Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico of Abruzzo intervened on the Gran Sasso Via Direttissima after a 34‑year‑old Canadian alpinist slipped while descending, lost orientation and required assistance. In Sicily, a 16‑year‑old girl vanished on Monte Gallo near Palermo on 7 June 2026. After straying from an abandoned trail and slipping on rocks, she was located by Alpine rescue teams summoned via the 112 emergency line. The rescuers gave first aid, escorted her to an ambulance and she was taken to the Civico Hospital in Palermo for further care.

Near Lucca, a woman became disoriented on Monte Sumbra while descending trail 145 on the same day. She activated the GeoResq app, which transmitted her GPS coordinates to the rescue centre. A squad from the Lucca Alpine Rescue arrived, found her with minor abrasions and escorted her safely back to the valley. These incidents underscore the importance of proper preparation, reliable equipment and rapid emergency‑location tools when hiking in mountainous terrain.
