Italian mountain rescue – End July 2026

Entities: Alpine Rescue Service · 49-year-old male hiker · Italian Carabinieri · Negrar Hospital · Fire Department

Overview

Mountain‑rescue activity in Italy remained intense through the end of July as rainstorms and rugged terrain generated a series of emergencies. The Club Alpino Italiano and CNSAS continued to issue safety guidance, urging hikers to monitor weather, use the 112 number and GeoResQ app, and reminding that CAI members have rescue‑cost insurance.

After the July 13 tragedy of two Romanian alpinists on Gran Paradiso, rescues continued on Gran Sasso (July 16), Monte Rosa (July 18) and elsewhere. July 20 saw a 60‑year‑old German hiker die after a 200‑m fall near the Plan refuge in Val Passiria, an 80‑year‑old man found dead above Tesimo, an 18‑year‑old Israeli tourist air‑lifted from a 20‑m cliff at Ponte del Ciolo, and a 62‑year‑old woman treated for anaphylaxis near Ancona. The Italian Air Force’s 82nd SAR Centre, together with the Sicilian Alpine and Speleological Rescue Service, rescued a 36‑year‑old on Marettimo island and a 70‑year‑old on Monte Cofano.

On July 25, at about 19:20 a Suem helicopter from Pieve di Cadore was dispatched to Civetta’s west face in Belluno. The crew winched two Polish alpinists to safety and transferred them to Rifugio Tissi. Later, after 22:10, an emergency heli‑ambulance rescued a German group of two guides and six teenage hikers who were stranded on trail 487 toward Bivacco Tovanella, completing the operation around 00:30.

The following day, on July 27, a 49‑year‑old man lost after leaving the Madonna della Corona sanctuary was located by a helicopter near Spiazzi. He was treated on site and flown to a hospital in Negrar for further care.

These incidents illustrate the ongoing coordination of regional SAR units, Alpine rescue teams and aerial assets as weather and terrain continue to challenge mountain users across Italy.
