1993 War Crimes in Modrići and Bijelo Polje

On 26 January 1993, during the Croatian war, enemy forces liquidated six civilians in the hamlet of Modrići, Zaton Obrovački, leaving a lasting scar on the local community.

On 30 June 1993, the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina attacked the North Camp and HVO positions in Bijelo Polje, killing eleven Croat civilians and prompting the establishment of detention camps in Potoci and other sites. Prisoners, including children, pregnant women and the elderly, endured extreme deprivation, with reports of severe weight loss and poor hygiene. A prisoner exchange took place on 2 December 1993, after which the surviving detainees were freed and received assistance from local clergy and families.

Both incidents illustrate the brutal civilian toll of the 1993 conflicts in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighting ongoing efforts to document and remember these war crimes.
