Srebrenica remembrance & denial – July 2026

Entities: Edin Ikanović · Branimir Kojić · Srebrenica Memorial Center · Informer · Milorad Dodik

Overview

The 31st anniversary of the July 1995 Srebrenica genocide was marked by a collective burial in Potočari that added ten newly identified victims, bringing the interred total to 6,782 while about 950 remain missing. Bosnia’s Institute for Missing Persons conducted its 17th collective re‑exhumation, opening 48 graves between 14 July and 17 July and relocating skeletal remains of more than 1,220 victims identified in earlier digs. A criminal complaint was lodged on 12 July over a Facebook comment that glorified the killings and rape. The United Kingdom addressed the OSCE on 11 July, linking remembrance to the prevention of atrocities such as Russia’s war in Ukraine.

On 22 August, the European Day of Remembrance for victims of totalitarian regimes was held at the Peace Cemetery in Bosnia. A Mass led by Mons. Dražen Kutleša featured performances by mixed choirs “Marija”, Pro Musica, and St. Cecilia parish, while organizers continued the second phase of raising memorial crosses. An EU‑organised protest in Podgorica’s Stari aerodrom neighbourhood, led by Bosniak Democratic Movement president Sead Šahman, condemned Montenegro’s parliamentary inclusion of a known Srebrenica denier, calling the move “deeply hypocritical”.

The Srebrenica Memorial Center’s 2026 annual report recorded 149 cases of genocide denial, relativisation and support for convicted war criminals – an increase from 99 the previous year. The report named several Bosnian and Serbian media outlets and politicians as primary channels. A separate analysis highlighted a US lobbying effort by Republika Srpska officials, including Milorad Dodik, costing $7‑8 million to influence Western right‑wing circles and portray Bosniaks as a security threat. Jasmin Mujanović warned the campaign aims to justify further division of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
