2026 Australian Census Highlights Importance for Religious Communities

On Tuesday 11 August 2026, every Australian household will complete the national census. The data collected will guide government planning for schools, hospitals, transport, housing, aged care and other essential services. For the Muslim community, the census is expected to record a population exceeding one million for the first time, making accurate responses crucial for representation, funding and community programs.

Social researcher Mark McCrindle notes that the way the religion question is framed can distort counts of Christian Australians, as the lack of a single “Christianity” box leads some respondents to select “no religion.” Under‑counting affects decisions on church zoning, school funding and parliamentary prayers. Both communities are urged to answer the religion question honestly to ensure their needs are reflected in future policy.
