Overview

In late June 2026 Christian organisations urged accurate reporting of religious affiliation in the upcoming Census, emphasizing its role in government planning and community support. By early July the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) called on all households to complete the Census, highlighting that religion data informs health, transport, education and other services. On 14 July the ABS confirmed the Census will be held on Tuesday, 11 August and reiterated that participation is compulsory, with fines of up to A$330 per day for non‑responders. Most responses will be online, while paper questionnaires, Braille versions and assistance for blind, low‑vision or homeless residents remain available. About 30,000 engagement and field staff have been deployed and a Contact Centre is operating to help households complete the survey. New items include a standalone gender‑and‑sexual‑orientation question for people 16 and over, an expanded ancestry question allowing up to four responses, and a health question on liver disease. On 21 July the Ukrainian Community of Queensland urged people of Ukrainian ancestry to record language, ancestry and religious affiliation so the community can receive appropriate funding and services. The Census also now asks whether respondents performed unpaid voluntary work in the past 12 months, providing data on the volunteering sector. On 26 July the ABS highlighted that the 2026 Census is the most inclusive to date, introducing questions that allow respondents to identify gender beyond the male‑female binary, specify sexual orientation, and use non‑gendered household terms such as “Parent 1” and “Parent 2”. Advocates, including April Long, welcomed the changes as a historic step for LGBTQ+ visibility, while some critics raised privacy concerns. The bureau said new encryption and handling protocols would protect the added sensitive data.
