French Baccalauréat 2026 results show slight drop in overall pass rate

The Ministry of National Education announced that the provisional overall success rate for the 2026 baccalauréat fell to 85.5 %, a marginal decline from 85.75 % in 2025. Pass rates for the general and technological streams each slipped by 0.5 percentage point, while the professional stream rose by the same margin.

The minister, Edouard Geffray, noted that recent reforms – limiting jury‑point boosts and tightening language‑quality criteria – have had limited impact on the figures. Approximately 714,700 candidates sat the exam; 90.6 % of those in the general stream, 78.8 % in the technological stream and 80.5 % in the professional stream were admitted after the first session.

Regional results varied widely. The academy of Lyon reported an 86.4 % success rate, above the national average, while Toulouse reached 89.6 % and Reims 82.9 %. In Mayotte, the first‑group results showed a 58.2 % admission rate, and at the lycée Vauban in Aire‑sur‑la‑lys the first‑tour pass rate was 93 % with 78 % of students earning mentions. In Saône‑et‑Loire, some schools reported as high as 97.6 % success. Celebrations were reported across France, including a ceremony in Nice for students receiving “Très bien” mentions.

Outside France, the first‑round provisional pass rate for the general baccalauréat in Gambia was 26.45 %, with Dakar leading among academies. These figures illustrate a modest nationwide decline but overall high attainment, while a small percentage of candidates will sit resit exams in early July.
