2026 Baccalaureate Reforms and Results

Entities: Ibrahima Kaba · Logone Oriental · Ministry of Education (Gabon) · Camélia Ntoutoume Leclercq · Chad

Overview

The Ministry confirmed that 714,700 candidates sat the 2026 baccalauréat, with a provisional national pass rate of 85.5 % after the first session and 91.4 % after the second. Pass rates varied by stream—90.6 % (general), 78.8 % (technological) and 80.5 % (professional). Regional results remained strong in France, with Manche at 93.4 % and Lozère at 95.4 %.

Education Minister Édouard Geffray introduced a series of reforms aimed at raising language mastery and mathematical competence. A mandatory “qualité rédactionnelle” assessment now applies to every subject; poorly written papers can be denied the diploma. The circular also bans “textes à trous” except for special‑needs students, proposes a mobile‑phone prohibition in lycées, and strengthens parental involvement.

A new nationwide early‑math exam for Première students was held in June, calculator‑free, worth a coefficient of 2 and feeding into the Parcoursup university‑admission platform. The same month saw the first written philosophy exams for over 530 000 seniors, with dissertation topics on speech, happiness and truth, and a strict language‑mastery rubric.

The Grand Oral, introduced in 2021, faced criticism over its emphasis on style, reduced coefficient (now 8 for general streams) and concerns about AI‑assisted preparation. Spelling standards were tightened further, with specific orthographic errors now penalised across all subjects.

The written portion of the baccalauréat concluded on 18 June; papers are scanned, distributed to roughly 52 000 teachers and graded on uniform grids. Results are scheduled for 7 July, with the French language component released between 5 and 13 July.

Overseas, Gabon’s final results confirmed an 85.59 % national success rate, while Algeria announced online recruitment for teacher and officer positions, reflecting a broader push toward digitalisation of public services.
